A Bayesian approach towards facilitating climate change adaptation research on the South African agricultural sector AgEcon
Musango, J.K.; Peter, C..
Evaluating the range of proposed adaptation measures to combat the sensitivity of agriculture to climate change effects involves evaluating complex interactions between human and natural systems. Integrated strategy-making and implementation in the agricultural sector to reduce the risks posed by climate change requires the consideration of multiple, interdisciplinary factors and the sensitivities of their inter-relationships. Lack of information on the sensitivity of agricultural activities to climate change in Africa hampers climate change adaptation research on the region. In water scarce South Africa, the growth of the agricultural sector is threatened by projected decreases in water availability due to climate change. This paper shows how Bayesian...

A Bayesian Large Deviations Probabilistic Interpretation and Justification of Empirical Likelihood AgEcon
Grendar, Marian; Judge, George G..
In this paper we demonstrate, in a parametric Estimating Equations setting, that the Empirical Likelihood (EL) method is an asymptotic instance of the Bayesian non-parametric Maximum-A-Posteriori approach. The resulting probabilistic interpretation and justifcation of EL rests on Bayesian non-parametric consistency in L-divergence.

A Binary-Ordered Probit Model of Cigarette Demand AgEcon
Kasteridis, Panagiotis P.; Munkin, Murat K.; Yen, Steven T..
This study analyzes the demand for cigarettes fitting observed zero outcomes with a trivariate model consisting of an equation for the starting smoking decision, an equation for the quitting decision, and an equation that models the level of cigarettes consumed. Five competing specifications are considered to explain level, with the ordered probit, which accommodates pile-ups of counts in the dependent variable, providing the best fit. Marginal effects of explanatory variables are calculated providing strong evidence of race and gender differences in consumption patterns. The estimated marginal effects are robust to alternative categorizations of the level of cigarettes.

A Bioeconomic Analysis of the Duration of Conservation Contracts AgEcon
Crowe, Bronwyn; White, Benedict.
Conservation and restoration of native vegetation is often a gradual process which may require many years to transform an ecosystem from one vegetative state to a target ecosystem. This process is stochastic, with some changes potentially irreversible. In contrast, contracts with landholders to undertake conservation measures on their property are typically for less than ten years and often make no contingencies for re-contracting at the end of the contract period. The risk to land holders and conservation agencies of contracts not being renewed and the consequent potential loss of previous investment means including covenants in conservation contracts may be attractive to both parties. A model is developed to empirically examine the optimal dynamic...

Le Bris, Nadine.
Although occupied submersibles have played an essential role in the discovery and study of hydrothermal ecosystems at depths ranging from 1500–3500 m, operational constraints at great depths have meant that the wide chemical and thermal diversity of the hydrothermal environments have long remained poorly defi ned. In the last decade, use of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to substantially extend dive time and development of a new set of dedicated instruments have greatly expanded our capacity to characterize seafl oor hydrothermal habitats at the interface between hydrothermal fl uid and seawater. In particular, major breakthroughs in the fi eld of in situ chemical sensing and highpressure experimentation have led to a much better understanding of the...

CHIARI, L.; RESENDE, R. M. S.; JANK, L.; VALLE, C. B. do; JUNGMANN, L..

A bioüzemanyag-gyártás nemzetközi összefüggései AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef.
A dráguló olajár „felszínre hozta” a fosszilis energiahordozók környezetbarát energiahordozókkal való kiváltásának problémáját. Az olajkészletek korlátozottsága mellett a bizonytalan kitermelés és a folyamatosan növekvő árak a bioüzemanyagok felé irányítják a politikai döntéshozók és a befektetők figyelmét. Az olajimportőr országoknak a bioüzemanyag-gyártás nyersanyagainak hazai termelése lehetővé teszi importköltségeik visszafogását, az üvegházhatást okozó gázok kibocsátásának csökkentését, valamint a mezőgazdasági termelők jövedelem-színvonalának javítását. A bioüzemanyagok elterjedése ugyanakkor enyhíti a kapacitása határán dolgozó olajfinomító ipar üzemanyag-ellátási terheit is, ami jelentős mértékben hozzájárul(t) az üzemanyagárak emelkedéséhez. Ma...

A Brazilian Bacillus thuringiensis strain highly active to sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) BJM
Gitahy,Patrícia de Medeiros; Souza,Marlene Teixeira de; Monnerat,Rose Gomes; Arrigoni,Enrico de Beni; Baldani,José Ivo.
The control of the major sugarcane pest, Diatraea saccharalis, is limited by the stem location of the caterpillar. As part of a long-term project towards the development of an alternative and efficient delivery system of Cry proteins to control the sugarcane borer, the current work describes the selection and characterization of a Brazilian B. thuringiensis strain with prominent activity towards D. saccharalis. Strain S76 was eleven-fold more active than the HD-1 Lepidoptera-standard strain, as estimated by the LC50 of 13.06 µg/L and 143.88 µg/L, respectively. We observed bipiramidal and cuboidal crystals similar to those found in other B. thuringiensis strains with entomopathogenic activity against Lepidoptera and Diptera. In addition, smaller and...

A Bug's Life: Competition Among Species Towards the Environment AgEcon
Bella, Giovanni.
A model of different species competing for the same environment is presented, and possible explanations of peaceful coexistence or rather internecine conflicts are consequently derived. By means of a Lotka-Volterra dynamic system we describe the evolution of two populations (bees and locusts) that differently approach the management of those natural resources they contend for, and thus make a simple parable of today’s societies playing the current environmental scenario.

A BUSCA DA FLEXIBILIZAÇÃO DO PROCESSO PRODUTIVO: O CASO DE UMA EMPRESA MANUFATUREIRA DO SETOR DE ALIMENTOS AgEcon
Lima, Marcelo Simao; Didonet, Simone.
Considering that the concepts of dynamic production system and traditional system are placed in opposite sides of a continuum, the critical factor for the companies is in finding the break-even point desired to maximize the results and to reduce costs. The aim of this paper is to verify the situation of the manufacturing company when using characteristics of both flexible production system and static system to keep a good level of service and to reduce operational costs. The qualitative research was based on a case study of a great nourishing branch company. The results shows that the company is located inside of continuum considered, thus getting a satisfactory balance between the corresponding level of service to the customer and operational costs. It...

A BÚZA ÉS KUKORICA FEDEZETI TERMÉSÁTLAGÁNAK ALAKULÁSA MAGYARORSZÁGON AgEcon
Hollosy, Zsolt.
A termésát-lagok jelentősen ingadoznak. A termelés meghatározó régiói: Észak- és Dél-Alföld, Dél-Dunántúl. A fedezeti termésátlag évről évre növekedett. A vizsgált időszakban a búzát a fő régiókban támogatások nélkül is sikerült – jellemzően a 26 AK-nál jobb minőségű földeken – nyereségesen termelni. A búzatermelés egé-szére igaz, hogy a vizsgált területek mindegyikén eredménnyel termelhető, a mel-léktermék költségcsökkentő, valamint a támogatások jövedelemnövelő...

A cabra Nambi. Infoteca-e

Rodríguez,N.M.; Campos,W.E.; Lachica,M.L.; Borges,I.; Gonçalves,L.C.; Borges,A.L.C.C.; Saliba,E.O.S..
An indirect calorimetry system for rapid determination of CO2 and CH4 production and O2 consumption to estimate heat production of animals was built at Escola de Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil. Procedures for determination of correction and calibration factors for gas analyzers and the whole system, using standard test gases were described. In addition, a metabolic trial was performed to evaluate heat production of lambs fed ad libitum. It is concluded that the system is suitable for heat production determinations in small and medium size animals.

A carbohydrate-based mechanism of species recognition in sea urchin fertilization BJMBR
Mourão,P.A.S..
In the present review, we describe a systematic study of the sulfated polysaccharides from marine invertebrates, which led to the discovery of a carbohydrate-based mechanism of sperm-egg recognition during sea urchin fertilization. We have described unique polymers present in these organisms, especially sulfated fucose-rich compounds found in the egg jelly coat of sea urchins. The polysaccharides have simple, linear structures consisting of repeating units of oligosaccharides. They differ among the various species of sea urchins in specific patterns of sulfation and/or position of the glycosidic linkage within their repeating units. These polysaccharides show species specificity in inducing the acrosome reaction in sea urchin sperm, providing a clear-cut...

A Case For Killing Humpback Whales? Nature Precedings
Nicholas J. Gales; Phillip J. Clapham; C. Scott Baker.
During the austral summer of 2007/08, hunting of Southern Hemisphere (SH) humpback whales will recommence after almost half a century of protection. The stated rationale for this hunt, by the Government of Japan (GoJ), is to gather important scientific information for use in management. If the scientific need were defensible, and the proponents had accommodated reasonable conservation concerns, then criticisms of the hunt would be limited to philosophical issues. This is not the case. The program’s research objectives are unlikely to be achieved by lethal methods and do not address the principal research needs for SH humpback whales identified by the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
